Hae Mee

I'm usually not very adventurous when it comes to cooking local food at home. I think this is mainly because the somehow the recipes for the dishes that interest me always seem to have too many steps! But I recently came across this Prawn Mee recipe which was given good reviews and didn't seem too difficult, so I decided to give my local-food-loving husband a treat and have Prawn Mee for dinner on Thursday.

This was the result:

I had cut down on the water required, using 4 cups instead of 5, because I had only 16 prawn heads and shells instead of the required 24, but as you can tell from the picture, I ended up with too little soup! This also because I didn't want to pull out the slow cooker and the stove-top boiling probably caused too much water to evaporate.

That aside though, I was really very pleased with it! The taste was surprisingly authentic and in that respect, I think the tiny addition of the cloves, star anise and black peppercorns really made the difference. As advised, I had also cut down the amount of brown sugar to just one teaspoon and I thought it was just right.

Unfortunately DD never made it back for dinner cos he had to work late. It was just as well since there would have been very little soup for him. I guess it just means that I'll have to repeat this again. I'm actually pretty eager to do it which tells you how much I actually like this dish!

Those of you who are interested, the recipe can be found here. Enjoy!
