Fingers Out!

Another sign that Noey is just a chip off the old block (ie. me)

Nail biting is a bad, bad habit of mine which I have to rid myself of. It manifests especially when I am nervous.

Now DD keeps giving me these looks when Noey can't keep his fingers out of his mouth. Yearrrgh. My bad, I know. I wonder if it's genetic or is it my bad example?

Whatever the case, I've been actively trying to get him to stop with minimal NO success. Obviously the repeated command -- "Don't put your fingers in your mouth!!!" -- is not very effective. Does any one have any suggestions what might work?

Fingerrrrrrrs in the mouth...

  1. My younger sis used to be a fervent thumbsucker and to wean her off it when she was 5 maybe, my mum explained it nicely to her that she had to cut the habit and to help her, she taped up her thumb with gauze and put some eucalyptus oil on it at night (not sure if it's safe to ingest actually). The foul smell/taste just served a reminder for her and it worked like a charm!

Alternatively, since Noey loves his books, can try to find a book talking about how germs lurk on our hands heh ;)

  2. i am a nail biter since young too! i was thinking that could be why my nail beds are so small even after i'm all grown up.

i did try to break the habit when i was young by applying this bitter "nail polish"-like thing (can't remember if it's by sally hansen). it leaves an awful taste in the mouth when you try to bite your nails. i got rid of the habit.

i still bite them these days but i put that under control when i think of my mani/pedi package.

  4. you can get the anti-nail-biting polish from any pharmacy. Just tell them you want the anti-nail-biting lotion. It goes on like nail polish, and the slightest bit fills your senses with this utter grossness that you would not get anywhere near ingesting a toxic amount... it's meant to help kick the habit. When applying it on my DD's fingers, I didn't wash my hands cleanly enough and got a taste of it! Man, it was AWFUL!!!!! So you can try... should work.

  5. K likes to put her fingers in her mouth too! She doesn't bite her nails but it's such a gross habit esp since she likes touching walls and rails outside. Maybe I should paint the anti-biting thing on her fingers. Haha.

  6. @olimomok haha, hey,i have some eucalyptus oil for naomi! the books are a good idea, though he is at the stage where he tells me he likes germs and cos he thinks it's funny. i shall see if there's anything good at the library the next time i'm there.

@Candiceeh, my nail beds are small too. i'm sure it's the nail biting. i'm like you! manis keep the habit in check.

@lilsnoozehahaha! yes, that's not going to work at this point! i really want to try to get him to stop quickly, before it becomes a lifelong thing, like mine.

@justpassingby hmmm, maybe i'll try that. and on myself too. haha!

@lynkleenoey initially only licked his fingers but then i recently realised that he's bitten his nails. both are such disgusting habits though.
