BBQ Under the Stars at the Port of Lost Wonder

In less than a week, the September school holidays will be upon us! I honestly barely caught my breath in August and here we are in September already.

If you, like me, are wondering what to do with the kids over the week long break, you might want to start off on the right note by checking out Port of Lost Wonder's BBQ Under The Stars, which will be happening this Saturday (and every first Saturday of the month, all the way till Dec).

I've always thought Port of Lost Wonder (POLW) was an excellent water playground, right from day one. They have upped the ante with BBQ Under the Stars. On these special nights, POLW stays open from 6.30pm to 9.30 pm, allowing the kids to continue having their water fun after the crowds have gone home, while serving up a good spread for the whole family at the same time. And once the sun goes down, it's movie time on the big screen, as you lounge on the sun beds. All this just by the beach. Doesn't that just put you in a holiday mood already? I know it sure did for me when we had the opportunity to visit last month.

The kids were very excited when we arrived and just wanted to get into the water immediately. It is hard not to want to do so with that huge pirate ship in front of you!

Knowing how crowded it could be in the day, it was great having virtually the whole pirate ship to ourselves in the evening. I took the kids into the water, while the husband took charge of getting our meals sorted out. I think he was enticed by the buffet line. I know I sure was! You order the main courses off an order sheet which is given to you upon arrival, with choices for adults and children:

For Adults

• Sausage Platter with Beer Sauce 
• Marinated Beef Rump 
• Boneless Chicken Thigh with Mushroom Sauce 
• Sambal Dory

For Children:

• Mini Burger Patty 
• Junior Sausage Platter

You can also choose from a complimentary drink or house pour.

But on top of that, there is a buffet with a salad bar, a chicken curry station, mee siam, and of course dessert that diner were free to help themselves to.

Meanwhile, the kids had found a new favourite spot -- the foam pool, which was also open till  late on this evening. The pirate ship did get a bit cold once the sun started to set and that was when we discovered that the water in the foam pool was surprisingly rather warm. In we got and the kids had a riot with all the bubbles. Naturally that meant that when I was eventually able to get them out, they were nice and hungry when they hit the table!

I thought they'd like the boneless chicken thigh but they ended up really liking the husband's sausage platter. So much so that we had to order another one so that there was enough to go round. I'm personally not so much a sausage fan but my family have different tastebuds. I was left to finish the chicken, which was really very decent and which thankfully I rather enjoyed. I also made sure that I got several helpings of mee siam and tried most of the salads so I was well and truly stuffed. That didn't stop me from filling up on Cheng Tng to end the evening.

We weren't able to keep the kids at the table for long because as soon as it started getting dark, Despicable Me started rolling on the big screen. We slowly migrated over, soon we were camped out all together watching the film and the sun went down. It was the first time the kids had watched the film, though they've been introduced to the minions, and they were properly thrilled to see the little yellow creatures.

All too soon, it felt, it was time to head home. Even then, the kids couldn't resist having a go shooting at each other before we headed out the door, much to my chagrin.

Fortunately no one got too wet!

BBQ Under the Stars at the Port of Lost Wonder happens every first Saturday of the month, from 6.30pm to 9.30pm. Prices are $35 per adult and $30 per child. and POLW members enjoy $5 off. I am told the that they will be screening The Rise of the Guardians this Saturday, with incidentally is a movie I've been meaning to watch.
