Let It Go at the Frozen Sing-A-Long!

Would you believe that it's been just about a year since Frozen first premiered in cinemas? When I caught the movie the first time I knew it was going to be popular, but it has truly taken the world by storm (and then some).

With a little girl who loves Frozen, loves dressing up as Elsa, whose eyes light up with she hears Let It Go playing anywhere, I knew I had to take her to Golden Village's special Frozen Sing-A-Long screenings. Yes, you read that right. These are screenings where you will be able to SING ALONG with Elsa and Anna and the rest of the crew as they build a snowman, let it go, and discover that love is an open door. You are in fact encouraged to sing along with the words appearing on screen karaoke style. I admit it, I was excited.

FrozenSingAlong1Prepping our vocal chords for the show was a must. (I thought I'd spare you from the video!)

Of course, we took the opportunity to dress the part. Especially since we were invited to a special Frozen Sing-A-Long Party before the show! Mei was tremendously excited that I finally said she could wear her beloved (and really lovely) Elsa dress, a gift from dear Aunty Audrey, out. But I thought I'd make her something special to go along with the dress too. I'd been thinking about it for a while and I guess this party was the impetus to get it done: I made her Elsa hair.

FrozenSingAlong2

A headband, lots of yarn, some embellishments, and lots of love and hard work. But her delight on seeing it made it all worth while. She also won a consolation prize in the best-dressed competition, which was a nice extra.

At the Frozen Sing-A-Long Party, the kids were treated to all manner of Frozen-related crafts, from making their own snowman out modelling clay, to decorating a paper snowflake, colouring Frozen pictures, and making bookmarks. There were glitter tattoos and in the corner, a makeover for kids by C'est Moi. And there was ice-cream too! The children sure were kept busy.

FrozenSingAlong3Building her snowman, and being terribly amused by her creation!

FrozenSingAlong4While Mei concentrates on lining up her many orange buttons, S shows how it should be done!

Before we knew it, it was time for our movie. This was the first time since the movie premiere that I was watching Frozen on the big screen and I must say it's such a treat. And of course, this time you get to SING! But you know what? For all her singing at home, Mei decided that she'd rather "just watch the movie," she said. So guess who sang? Yup, me! I really had fun singing along to the tunes, and finally getting the lyrics right for some of the songs I wasn't so familiar with like Fixer Upper. I did expect to hear more people singing along though, but I didn't, though friends tell me their kids all sang along! So I think if you're thinking of going to a future Frozen-Sing-Along screening and thought you're going to have to listen to a chorus of people singing Let It Go together, I don't think you have to worry too much about that.

If you're keen to attend a Frozen-Sing-Along screening, the good news is that this will be held at selected Golden Village cinemas from 11 to 17 December 2014. You can find more information and book your tickets on the Golden Village website. Each ticket costs $8 and GV Movie Club members stand a chance to win 1 out of 5 Frozen hampers worth $190 each if they purchase 2 or more tickets. These screenings do NOT include the Frozen-Sing-Along Party and activities, but I'm sure the kids (and maybe you) will still enjoy being allowed to sing in the cinema to their favourite songs.

FrozenSingAlongPoster

She might not have sung at the screening but since coming home with the Frozen soundtrack that she won for best-dressed, she's been marathon singing ever since! And I… have been singing along with her. When you can't beat them, join them, right? Good thing I still love these songs!

Goodbye Kindy Days!

One week into the school holidays and I'm finally having some time to catch my breath.

Over the weekend, I took some time to upload some photos that had been sitting in my camera and came across some photos from the last day of school made me smile. The last day of school is traditionally a huge water play day for the whole school. Staff and helpers arrive early to fill over 10 pools, with one strategically placed under the playground slide, turning it into a water slide! It is one of the highlights of the kindy calendar.

This year's edition was particularly poignant for us since it was Noey's last. The weather threatened and we woke to grey skies. I thought there was a chance that the whole event might have to be cancelled. But God heard our fervent prayers and the weather held out -- it was cloudy but fine. Perfect weather in fact outdoor water play. He truly provides.

Did the kids have a blast? You can bet they did! The teachers gamely got in the act too -- and got wet!

WaterplayDay2

WaterplayDay3

WaterplayDay5

There was a festive atmosphere about that morning as plenty of parents took time to hang out and help out. For most of us K2 parents, it was also a chance to catch some last photos and say our goodbyes. I braced myself, but I didn't feel as sad as I thought I would. Mostly because I knew I was still going to be coming to the school for another 3 more years for Mei, and I would still see a number of the mums whom I was fond of in the coming year. It was a morning to celebrate the end of school, and I think we all made the most of it.

It was only right at the end, when the kids had been dried, clothes changed and ice-creams eaten that it sank in for Noey. We were hanging around, ready to leave but not quite leaving yet when, in the midst of playing, he told his friend "I will miss you." His friend's mother couldn't help it -- she started tearing at the point. As for me, my heart ached for my little man, for friendships made, treasured, but which might have run their course. I am not the best at staying in touch with friends. Despite at times appearing gregarious, I can also be quite a recluse. I find it hard to ask people out, even people I know well. I just have a bad habit of over thinking everything -- whether it's the right day, whether the other person would enjoy the activity, whether it's too far away, too expensive, too cold, what the wet weather alternative should be, where we can eat… and then I become paralysed and I don't arrange anything. But for my kids, I know have tried, and must continue to try harder.

The last day of school encapsulated what school has been for Noey these past four years. It has been a place for him to learn, grow and play (and enjoy little treats!). It has been a second family, a home away from home. Like all families, we don't always agree with everyone or all the decisions made, but I know that those in charge have the kids' interests at heart, and that their service is rendered unto God first then unto men. That is good enough for me.

And so, the first and last year EVER of my two kids being in the same school at the same time comes to a close. As Noey moves on, I can only place him in the Lord's hands and pray -- that he would find friends that he can love and trust and who have his back, be given teachers who care not only for his learning ability but his character and growth, just as he had here in kindy. Good bye kindy, you have been good to us and we will miss you.

Tennis Action at the WTA Finals

The WTA Finals are in town this week and since we recently got Noey started on tennis, I thought it might be fun to bring him bring him down to catch a match or two. I figured watching a match live, by court side, being played by some of the best players in the world might give him a better appreciation of the game and maybe inspire him a little.

And ok, I wanted to watch some matches! It isn't everyday that THE BEST female tennis players in the world stroll into our neck of the woods to play top level sport. I'm not a huge tennis fan but I watched enough television sports with my Dad to know the rules and enjoy most sports. (Just don't ask me about cricket.) So I don't do any sports any more but watching, that's still fun.

After identifying affordable tickets -- the day tickets for the round-robin matches -- I persuaded my dear ol' Dad to join me with the children for an afternoon of tennis action. On the schedule were Maria Sharapova v Agnieszka Radwanska and Caroline Wozniacki v Petra Kvitova. I was excited.

It was my first time watching tennis live, and I really enjoyed the atmosphere. It was a Friday afternoon but lots of people turned up and there was a good buzz around the stadium. I can only imagine it would be even better in the evening when I assume more people would turn up. The kids were excited too as I tried to give them a run down on the players, the game, and who the various persons standing around were (ie. the linesmen and ball boys!). Noey was also very amused by the signs being led up by supporters, in particular the one when words flashing in hot pink, asking "Maria, will you marry me?"

WTA1Sharapova serves...

WTA2Excited to join in the cheering!

Well, unfortunately (or fortunately, if our objective was to get our monies worth) the game turned out to be an epic 3-setter with a really tight first two sets! We watched Sharapova take the first set 7-5, then reel off most of the points to race to a 5-1 lead. At that point the kids started being rather restless and I told them that it was going to be over soon and we could go outside to play at the Fan Zone. Except that I was so wrong. Radwanska started returning everything and despite there being a few match points, Sharapova just couldn't finish to take the set. Radwanska staged an incredible fight back and unbelievably managed to take the set 7-6 (7-4). It was exciting for me but not so much the kiddos.

WTA8When Radwanska started pulling back the points.

WTA3Little Miss restless and tired.

Lots of good tennis but I must confess that throughout the entire period the one thought that kept running through my mind was that Women's tennis has the best outfits! I mean, with badminton, table tennis, squash (well, if anyone even plays squash any more) it's mostly shorts and tees, but tennis! Radwanska was wearing a dress with colourful butterflies on it which I couldn't help but keep staring at. It wasn't exactly my taste but I was just fascinated by the fact that they have options like that! As good a reason for me to pick up tennis as any, no?

WTA10Agnieszka Radwanska concentrates on the job at hand, unlike me -- I'm staring at her dress!

We left after the second set and didn't stay for the tie-breaker since it was already 2 hours and 20 mins of sitting still and the kids really couldn't take it any more. Naomi fell asleep near the end of the second set, so it was only Noey who had a go at the Fan Zone.

WTA4Out like a light! Luckily for me I had my Dad to help with the carrying!

If you're in the area over the weekend, I would recommend that you check out the WTA Fan Zone, which is located next to the Singapore Indoor Stadium, in the area right outside Kallang Wave Mall. It is open to all and both you and the kids can try your hand at a number of activities like trying to clock the fastest service, bouncing on a trampoline while trying to hit balls being served to you by a ball machine at a target, and hitting a tennis ball covered with paint at a wall to create art work. You can also access the social media wall and learn more about the players and their game stats, as well as see computer generated replays of the game. There are also autograph sessions with the stars at certain times.

WTA5A different kind of paint ball.

WTA6They take a photo for you and e-mail you a free soft copy.

WTA9Jump tennis!

WTA7That's the closest we get to the trophy!

We had a great time wandering around the Fan Zone, the experience enhanced by the many friendly hosts in the zone, who were lovely and helpful and very happy to talk about tennis. The Fan Zone will be open for the duration of the tournament which ends on Sunday.

Despite all the complaints, when their Papa asked them how the event was after he returned home, both children told him they enjoyed it! Hur hur. Well, since Singapore will be hosting the WTA Finals for the next 4 years, I dare say we'll be back again next year.

Those Nanoblock Fascinators and the Singapore Blog Awards 2014

OMYSBA2014 1

It isn't everyday that you get to wear Lego on your head, but if you're going to do it, I guess it'd better be for a special occasion. In this case, it was the Singapore Blog Awards 2014!

(Ok, it wasn't really Lego but nanoblocks that made their way into my headpiece but you get the drift!)

It all started when the petite travellers received the honour of being one of the  finalists for the Best New Blog at this year's blog awards. The event had a derby theme, so we knew there were going to be hats all around. But we also wanted to incorporate our travel theme, with a look that was distinct yet cohesive amongst the few of us attending.

With that in mind, we brainstormed over many days as we considered hats with city skylines, hats with 3D cardboard structures and hats with our emblematic red suitcase on them. We even when as far as considering wearing the red suitcase as a hat! Time was ticking down and we had no workable idea. Then, just three days before the ceremony, Jas came across a 3D cardboard structure that she thought might work, except that we were not sure we were going to be able to find five more different cardboard structures. But while I was fiddling with a 3D puzzle set of Sydney Harbour Bridge to see if it could be used, an image of nanoblock landmarks suddenly came into my head, and I thought: maybe we should use nanoblocks?

As we discussed it, it sounded more and more plausible. It helped that the structures looked good and were not heavy, and best of all, were readily available. As my husband and son told me when I asked, you can buy nanoblocks "everywhere". We got some sets and settled on a fascinator style, which Jas, Corsage and Pam proceeded to test out. And when they sent us some pics, I knew: This was it. Just in the nick of time too!

It was hard work putting the structures together -- nano bricks are so tiny! Our biggest fear was that the brick structures will coming crashing down as we wore them (and mine did, many times during construction), so GLUE was essential. Each stress point was tested then UHU-ed in place.

You would think my Lego-loving husband would have been supportive, but he just gave me incredulous looks when I told him that the Eiffel tower structure he was admiring was going to go on my head. "It's just so… impractical!" he said repeatedly.

But whaddya know, the nanoblocks held together and collectively, I thought the group of us looked great. There's nothing like doing something kooky with friends! It would have been more awesome if all nine of us could have attended!

OMYSBA2014 3The different landmarks we wore, clockwise from top left: Big Ben (London), Eiffel Tower (Paris), The Great Pyramid (Egypt), Neuschwanstein Castle (Germany), and St Basil's Cathedral (Russia).

We didn't win the Best New Blog award by the way, in case you were wondering. I personally didn't expect us to, since we were up against some strong contenders. So the award ceremony was really a time to check out the scene, put some faces to names I'd only seen online and hang out with friends. We were familiar with the mummy-blogger crowd of course, many of whom were nominees for Best Parenting Blog, and it was great to have the opportunity to catch up.

OMYSBA 4Five of us from petite travellers with the lovely mums from Growing with the Tans, PruneNurture, A Pancake Princess, MummyWee, The Gingerbread Mum, and A Juggling Mom!

I think we were all running on adrenaline because I was so tired at the end of it, and ready to crash! Didn't help that it was a standing event and the first time I was wearing closed-toe pumps in months!

The whole process of starting petite travellers, entering the Singapore Blog Awards, qualifying as a finalist, and attending the award ceremony was quite an experience, made all the better by the fact that I was doing it, and going through it all with friends. Blogging, writing, even being a Mummy can be very lonely pursuits, and it helps to have folks you can call on for support, to ask for advice, for prayers, to share in your joys, to bounce ideas off, and yes, to wear nanoblocks together. I thought I was past the age where one makes meaningful friendships but you know what? I was wrong and God has served up a blessing in these lovely ladies. And I sure am grateful for that!

Happy Father's Day, Awesome Dads!

Is it just me or does Father's Day seem more low-key than Mother's Day? It is a pity, because it seems to suggest that Mums are more valued than Dads.

But that really shouldn't be the case, because Daddies are important. They matter. And we sure do need them as much as we need our Mums.

Well, this year, I decided that I couldn't let Father's Day go without celebrating some of the awesome Dads that I know so I roped in some of my Mummy friends to help with a little Instagram tribute on @foxfashionsg. I asked them to contribute a picture corresponding to the photo prompt: "My Dad is an Awesome ______________." My amazing friends responded so well that I had more pictures than I was able to use. So I've decided to post the full list here instead. Here are our (or rather our kids') awesome Dads:

AwesomeDads3

@missustay: My Dad is an Awesome Hugger!

@scissorspaperstoneblog: My Dad is an Awesome Encourager.

@fanyin_ih: My Dad is an Awesome Sandcastle-Builder.

AwesomeDads4

@olimomok: My Dad is an Awesome Superhero Dad!

@mummydelphine: My Dad is an Awesome Multi-tasker.

@mylollipopdays: My Dad is an Awesome Buddy.

AwesomeDads6

@p2me1a: My Dad is an Awesome Storyteller.

@littlebluebottle: My Dad is an Awesome Acrobat!

@adollopofme: My Dad is an Awesome Car Washer

AwesomeDads7

@aisakuraharuka: My Dad is an Awesome source of Support.

@susankoh: My Dad is an Awesome Ice-Cream Eating Companion!

@dottiedotz: My Dad is an Awesome Art Teacher.

AwesomeDads8

@june_yong: My Dad is an Awesome Troubleshooter.

(There, I really felt like putting exclamations at the end of every one of those but felt it might be a bit much.)

And then there's our own Dad, the Daddy who is the an awesome Lego-builder (and supplier) and an awesome dance partner, who is the best playmate, tells the best stories, makes his children laugh with wild abandon. The one who is always up for a tickling match, reads countless books, and lets his children rummage through his awesome Lego collection (under highly supervised conditions). The one who is the firm disciplinarian, who leads family worship, who is the head of our house. the one who points us to Christ.

We had a rather low-key (yes, gasp, I did say low-key) Father's Day celebration as the husband strongly requested that I not make a big song and dance of it. So there were Father's Day greetings, and there was Nando's for lunch and his favourite Chicken Macaroni for dinner. He got to take a nice long uninterrupted nap and otherwise spent the whole day doing lots of fathering. It was just what he wanted.

(If your Dad is less low-key than ours, and if you're looking for ideas to celebrate Father's Day, here are some suggestions. In fact, you don't have to use them only on Father's Day -- use them to celebrate your Dad any day!)

AwesomeDads2

Happy Father's Day to all you awesome Dads! We are blessed to have you.

Easter Thanksgiving

Today I am feeling thankful for...

… friends who willingly step up and pitch in. Who saw a need and filled it with their various talents to make our Easter Egg Hunt a truly collaborative effort.

EasterMob2

… for happy faces and egg and spoon races. For games thoughtfully planned and sportingly undertaken.

Eastermob3

… for eager little hands that hunted down eggs and filled up their baskets.

Eastermob4

… for moments shared and friendships made and strengthened. For the opportunity for our children to connect and share the same.

Eastermob5

… for the one empty egg, that reminded us of that empty tomb, empty because Jesus arose from the dead and is alive forever more.

Eastermob6

… for the wonderful redemptive work of Christ, and for God's grace, so unmerited but so richly given.

I had a wonderful Easter break and I hope you did too.

Ben & Jerry's Free Cone Day 2014

Free Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream! That certainly got my attention.

Free Cone Day has been a Ben & Jerry's tradition since 1979, a day when the ice-cream chain thanks its loyal customers for their support over the past year by dishing out free ice-cream to all! I think it's a nice gesture with the added bonus that it's great for PR!

I've missed the event year after year, always realising at the last minute that it was D-Day. But this time! This time I had rather providentially walked past the the promotional poster at Great World City just the week before. I made a mental note of the date, then hatched a plan with our swim mates to head over for free ice-cream after our swim session on 8 April. We picked Dempsey, thinking that it's more inaccessible location might mean smaller crowds in the middle of the afternoon.

Well, the crowd wasn't small. There were loads of students! But the queue was very well managed and there was a carnival-like atmosphere around which made the whole process more palatable. Instead of holding the event at their store, Ben & Jerry's had wisely set up shop in the open carpark behind their store, so there was plenty of space for the snacking queue, and more stations for the scoopies who were busy dishing out ice-cream. There were also plenty of helpers getting folks to pose with props and being around to ensure that the queue was kept moving. Thumbs up on a well-run event!

B JFCD1We made it to Free Cone Day!

B JFCD2That's me, the 1st year Cone Newbie. They handed out stickers to everyone, from 1st year Cone Newbies to 2nd Year Scoop Rockers, up to 6th year Moo Masters and 8th year Resident Gurus!

B JFCD3Donation boxes were strategically placed to collect donations for Ben & Jerry's charity partner, The Children's Charities Association of Singapore.

We stood in line for about half an hour before we got to the front of the queue. In that time, we had plenty of time to contemplate the all important question of which flavour we were going to get. I was pleasantly surprised to see that pretty much the full menu of scoop shop flavours were made available, though the the downside to going later in the day was that about half of the flavours had run out. They were out of New York Superfudge Chunk (my favourite flavour!!) and in fact, all chocolate-based flavours like Chocolate Therapy, Phish Food and Chocolate Fudge Brownie. In the end, I opted for their newest flavour Couch Potato, a vanilla ice-cream with a salty caramel swirl and chocolate covered potato chip clusters. It was surprisingly good! The kids wolfed down their English Toffee Crunch and Strawberry.

B JFCD4Friendly scoopies serving up our ice-cream

B JFCD5The little miss is well-pleased.

B JFCD6Even little B got in on the action, with a cone AND ice-cream in a cup!

It was a nice afternoon treat. Maybe I'll be back for my 2nd year next year!

Tulipmania with Miffy at Gardens By The Bay

There will be tulips blooming in Singapore over this week and guess which little tike had a tiny part to play in that?

Tulipmania1

Following its hugely successful run last year, Tulipmania will be returning to Gardens By The Bay this year, starting tomorrow! From 14 April to 4 May 2014, the flower field in the Flower Dome will be awash with tulips and hyacinths, and it promises to be a spectacular sight.

But before that, the flowers have to be planted, and we were really excited to be invited to be part of the gardening crew for the day.

We were first briefed on the layout of plants on the flower field, which looks to be quite different from last year's arrangement. Instead of rows, the flowers will be grown around miniatures of Dutch canal scenes, houses and windmills in a setup inspired by Madurodam, a popular miniature park in the Netherlands.

Tulipmania2

Just as I was starting to get a little bit worried about the size of the task, we were led to the back-of-house and shown what we actually had to do: plant tulip bulbs in pairs in planter boxes. (Whew!) These planter boxes would, when completed, be installed in front of Dutch houses to bloom. The tulip bulbs, all 25,000 of them, had arrived overnight from Holland, conveniently grown in their own little individual planters. So all we had to do was pop them out and replant them in the planter boxes. I was surprised to learn that it takes 4 to 5 years to grow tulip bulbs to the size that were being used for Tulipmania. Size matters! The bigger the bulbs, the bigger and stronger the flowers they produce.

Tulipmania3

We were given gardening tools and big bags of compost and told to get going. All the kids needed to hear were the reassuring words: "it doesn't matter if you make a mess!". With that, they were off! Naomi's favourite bit was digging in compost.

Tulipmania4

And Noey's was trying to work out the optimum height to achieve the best compost-in-planter to compost-on-table ratio.

Tulipmania5

He was pretty pleased with our handiwork when we were done! Some of the bulbs didn't quite sit straight, but another interesting thing we learnt about tulip bulbs is that they are phototropic, ie. they will always grow towards the light. So it didn't matter if the bulbs were leaning to a side as they would naturally grow up straight up to the light anyway. Very forgiving toward us amateur gardeners, I'd say!

Tulipmania7

The real highlight for the morning however, weren't so much the tulips but a certain bunny who caused quite a stir with her appearance -- Miffy! If you're wondering what Miffy has to do with tulips, the answer is that is that, like these tulips, Miffy hails from The Netherlands. (Hands up those of you who thought that Miffy was Japanese!) Miffy's original Dutch name is Nijntje, a shortening of diminutive konijnte or "little rabbit".

Tulipmania8

It was our first time meeting Miffy live and the kids were very taken by her, especially Meips. She couldn't keep away from Miffy and kept trailing Miffy around, wanting to go hold her hand and give her a hug. I had to physically remove her to prevent her from getting in the photos of others.

Tulipmania13(Photo credit: KLM's Facebook Page)

As an added bonus, the children were give the opportunity to do some planting in the flower field under the watchful eye of Miffy. Boy, were they enthusiastic! Armed with shovels and their hyacinth bulbs, they got down to work.

Tulipmania6

Tulipmania12

The kids both enjoyed the process thoroughly and proved themselves to be pretty good gardeners, though Meips was foiled in her attempt to shower her Gor-gor with soil.

Tulipmania10

After all that work, someone really needed to rest!

Tulipmania9

We'll be back again at Tulipmania again this week to see the flowers in bloom. The tulips are expected to start blooming from tomorrow and the best time to catch them is likely to be the upcoming Good Friday long weekend (or slightly before that!). If you're excited to catch Miffy, do note that Miffy will only be making special appearances at Tulipmania at the following events:
